Gabriele Gianni (b. 1978) is an Italian artist and filmmaker. In 2010 his experimental short film DYSLEXIA premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. For the Fondazione Carla Fendi he wrote and directed four films. A SENSE OF WONDER is about the extraordinary life of the British scientist Stephen Hawking. ECCE ROBOT explores artificial intelligence and robotics through the thought of the mathematician Alan Turing. ABOUT SOL looks at the Italian years of the artist Sol LeWitt. NOTES ON STONE is about the Austrian sculptor Anna Mahler, daughter of the composer Gustav Mahler. All four films premiered at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto between 2018 and 2021.
In 2022 he created REALITY?, an augmented reality installation exploring the illusory space of consciousness. In 2023 he created ARTIFICIAL CREATION, an installation on the act of creating in the age of artificial intelligence. In 2024 he presented the XR experience UNTITLED WORSHIP at the Triennale di Milano, curated by Spazio Taverna, an exploration of the augmented space of the sacred.
His exhibition VARIABILE ALTEMPS (2024) was curated by Marco Bassan, Ludovico Pratesi and Chiara Giobbe and produced by the Fondazione Carla Fendi. It set up a dialogue between contemporary art, artificial intelligence and the collection of the Museo Nazionale Romano.
For the video installation SPECULUM, shown in the exhibition “Guercino. The Ludovisi Era in Rome” at the Scuderie del Quirinale, he developed an AI model that replicates reflections on water. This liquid territory, chosen as a virtual mirror, lets two masterpieces reflect each other until they become pure forms of light.
In 2026 he created MATERIA DINAMICA for the Farnesina Collection of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The work is part of a research project on the nature of artificial intelligence and its latent tension toward life.
